JULY 7 BOLIDE
At 17:33:37 GMT on July 7, 1995, DoD satellite sensors recorded the bright flash of a meteoroid-produced fireball in the atmosphere over the Eastern U.S. The duration of the main flash of this daylight fireball, as measured by satellite visible-light sensors, was approximately 1.2 seconds. Peak radiant intensity, using a 6000K blackbody model for its emission, corresponded to a visual magnitude of -20.2. Radiated energy, using the same model, is estimated at 1.5 x 10^11 joules. Location of the explosive disintegration of the meteoroid was placed at 40.1N, 76.1W.
There also has been at least one eyewitness report of this bolide. That sighting was made from the Washington Beltway (I495) facing toward the north.
